Event Type Exhibition Description ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The Albany Institute of History & Art (AIHA) is collaborating with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians (the indigenous inhabitants of this region) and contemporary Mohican artist Tamara Aupaumut to develop an exhibition celebrating 400 years of Mohican art, history, and culture. ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING Mohican artist Tamara Aupaumut’s self portrait Programming for this exhibition is multisensory and will span from the museum’s front lawn into the galleries. An ethnobotanical garden composed of Indigenous medicinal plants will be developed in partnership with Misty Cook, an herbalist who has studied the plants of the Stockbridge-Munsee community. That garden will be built in raised beds on the front lawn, welcoming visitors in, and allowing potential patrons to immediately experience exhibition programming for free. And a musical work composed by Mohican/Munsee-Lenape composer Brent Michael Davids will be performed to enrich the visual gallery experience. In 2024, Albany will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Fort Orange, the first permanent Dutch settlement in the area that developed into the present-day city of Albany. AIHA will host a contemporaneous exhibition that uplifts Indigenous curators and artists, giving them space to share their version of the history of this land. Art classes developed by Education staff will further complement the exhibition Organization Hosting the Event Albany Institute of History and Art Phone Number 5185056212Additional Information
