Details
Event Type Walk/Hike Description We will begin at the Shore of Hessian Lake, near the paddleboat dock. The first leg will be a paved flat path around the lake. The Major Welch trail will veer hard left and proceed up the back of Bear mountain. This section is a long steady climb with a few near rock scrambles. We recommend a Hiking stick or trekking poles to ease your way along. The trail flattens up a bit only near the very top, at which point we will take a break. Perkins Fire Tower will be open (weather permitting) and there is a wonderful clearing (with a coin-op binocular viewer) that provides a view of the Manhattan skyline on clear days. The walk back will be along the Appalachian trail. There are a lot of stairways installed so the passage down will be nice and leisurely. On the way back down there are a few good places to stop and view the valley or have a handful of Trailmix. Leading the hike will be Ryan Gerbehy, an experienced hiker and guide.
