In July 1680, New Paltz Patentee, Christian Deyo, purchased an enslaved African man named Jack from New York City physician, Hartman Wessels. Nine years later, Christian's son, Pierre Deyo, purchased an enslaved African girl named Betty from a trafficker in New York City named James Barré. These are the first recorded purchases of enslaved Africans in the community of New Paltz, and Jack and Betty are the earliest recorded African residents of the town. In this presentation, Ulster County Historian, Eddie Moran, will guide attendees through documentary sources to discuss what we know about Jack and Betty, and what their lives in New Paltz may have been like.

She'll then talk about how shipwrights utilize these different woods for different purposes when building wooden boats, drawing examples from the construction and ongoing maintenance of the sloop Clearwater.

On August 31, 1776, the only intact government of the new State of New York, the Committee of Safety, found temporary safety in Irvington at the Odell Tavern. The Odell Tavern is an intact historic tenant farmhouse that served as a drover’s tavern during the revolution and is within the borders of what is now the Village of Irvington. That event will be commemorated on Aug. 31, 2026 in Irvington.
