  • September 10, 2017, 1:00PM, Guided Tour
  • September 23, 2017, 1:00PM, Guided Tour

On View in the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park Dates: May 21, 2017 – April 30, 2018 Opening Reception, Sunday May 21 from 12:00-5:00pm Rockland Center for the Arts, in partnership with Collaborative Concepts, have sited sculptures by 15 regional artists on RoCA's new nature trails, just off the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park. Inspired by the natural habitat of the lower Hudson Valley, the sculptors pay homage to the creative spirit that lives right here in Rockland. Artists address ideas of light, organics, recycling and sustainability through these sculptures. These trails help you reconnect with nature and relieve the ‘nature deficit disorder’ so prevalent today. Perfectly placed sculptures, visible through and around the natural habitat brings a fresh enchantment to these trails. A glimpse of an art piece beckons the visitor to meander slowly through the paths and observe the intricacies of each exceptional work displayed within the landscape. Sarah Haviland’s large metal bird, Spirit of Place, glistens through the trail while Michael Natiello’s,Red Neck Gong, reminds us of the solitude and tranquility in nature. Denis Folz’s Nailed It sculpture brings a sense of humor and JoAnn Brody’s female Totems/Bones gives a tribal feeling to the trails. The sculpture trail connects to the Palisades Park. It is our hope that this tourist destination will have an emotional connection for visitors with nature, the art and inspire all to spend more time outdoors in the Hudson Valley and Rockland. Opening reception events on May 21 include: artist talks, tours of the exhibition which starts at 12:00 noon and is FREE, and a drop-in Wood Sculpture Workshop for Families from 2:00-5:00pm ($10 per person). The exhibits will be on view May 21, 2017 – April 30, 2018, free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. Rockland Center for the Arts is located at 27 S. Greenbush Rd., West Nyack, NY. Gallery hours are: Mon-Fri 10-4 pm; Sat and Sun 1-4 pm. For more information visit www.rocklandartcenter.org or call 845-358-0877. RoCA’s programs are made possible, in part, with funds from Rockland County Tourism, the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Jacques Jarrige: Curves #1, #2, #3 Sculpture in Park and Nature Trails

@ 27 South Greenbush Rd., West Nyack, NY

  • September 23, 2017, 2:00PM, Til 5 pm

Opening event: September 23, 2017 2-5 PM at RoCA Jacques Jarrige has created a site-specific work for RoCA’s outdoor sculpture garden to be on display from September 23, 2017 until June 30, 2018. Entitled CURVES #1 the main piece evokes the surface of a frozen wave captured in hand wrought aluminum placed in a naturally formed apse of three trees – a sculptural expression of energy flow, light and nature. Two additional hand hammered aluminum sculptures incorporating the kinetics of wind and sound vibration, CURVES #2 & #3 will be installed in the nature trail. Jacques Jarrige’s work over the last thirty years has always focused on the dialogue around the relation of person and objects. In all of his endeavors from sculpture, to design and fabrication of objects for the home, to independent artistic interventions; he has sought to find a balance between disparate qualities of artist, viewer, and object. In each medium, a sensual, often hesitant line strives to embrace an elusive volume. The tension between minimal solid shapes and expansive open space is at the heart of his three-dimensional expressive drawings in which he feels it is the medium that dictates his every move. At the end with the artist’s process retained in the object he invites the viewer to freely continue the dialogue. Saturday, Sept. 23rd, 2-5 pm, Rockland Center for the Arts, (27 South Greenbush Road, West Nyack) will have an opening reception of Sculptures by Jacques Jarrige in the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park and in our Nature Trail. Free to the public. For more information contact: Rockland Center for the Arts, 845-358-0877, info@rocklandartcenter.org. Elemental Forces

@ The Catherine Konner Sculpture Park at Rockland Center for the Arts

  • September 9, 2018, 11:00AM

Identifying renewable energy sources is an important issue facing humanity going forward. It is a task requiring the collaboration of scientists, entrepreneurs, businesses, governments and consumers. How can the artist play a role in advancing the emergence of renewable energy? How can artists help inspire dreams of what might be and work towards a better future?? This public art exhibit invited artists to create sculptures using renewable energy utilizing solar, wind, and geothermal to the potential of alternative energy. These sculptures set in The Catherine Konner Sculpture Park harness a component of renewable energy. We feel very fortunate to have six amazing artists who are known for their innovation in public art as well as their activism with the environment and sustainability. Artists include: Professor Robert Dell, Jeff Kahn, James Murray, Aurora Robson, Peter & Cassie Strasser, and Chuck von Schmidt. RoCA is proud to have on display one of Professor Robert Dell’s geothermal-powered sculptures, created and originally powered by hot springs during a Fullbright Senior Research Fellowship in Iceland. Dell, a MacDowell Fellow, is the Founding Director of the Center for Innovation and Applied Technology at The Cooper Union in New York City. The Smithsonian has now recognized him as a “progenitor of sustainable art” and for his geothermal installations. His papers on this subject are in the permanent collection as part of The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. As an engineer, inventor, author and sculptor he has developed several green technologies, including an outdoor system of heated ground agriculture that was constructed and tested at the Agricultural University of Iceland. Jeff Kahn’s “Wind Shear” is among the kinetic sculptures harnessing the wind. Kahn’s pieces are created and calibrated to move with breezes under 1 mph, under the heat of the sun, or the weight of the morning dew. He explores balance and gravity and the way almost imperceptible air currents interact with them. Gravity is the motivating force and the element that holds these kinetic sculptures together. Kahn uses his 40 years of experience as a jeweler, machinist and woodworker in his kinetic sculpture. His work is in the permanent collections of such places as the National Air and Space Museum, The Franklin Mint and the New York Botanical Gardens. Kahn along with artists Peter & Cassie Strasser and Chuck von Schmidt explore the interaction of the natural element of wind with movable art. Peter and Cassie Strasser created an old fashioned wind vane to harness available air currents, titled Where Do We Go From Here. The movement will cause its walking people to rotate on its tripod axis high in the air. Peter and Cassie are both adept at restoring and working with many mediums and objects, having both worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Conservation and Restoration departments. Chuck von Schmidt embraces the awesome effects of weather on our lives in his Polly Von sculpture. The piece harkens to the folk song in which a hunter mistakenly shoots his beloved when he mistakes her for a swan. The swan pivots and balances on the arrow which pierces it. It weathervanes with the wind and tilts when the pan on the “head” fills with water. The water spills and the swan tips back up into balance. Von Schmidt’s work is in such permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Neuberger Museum and the Musei Vaticani. Aurora Robson and James Murray utilize solar power. James Murray’s Totemic Charge, made from salvaged phone cubicles are welded into a column. These recycled and reclaimed materials, along with a solar panel captures the sun to provide renewable and useful energy enabling visitors to recharge their cell phones or tablets through the sculpture. Murray’s work can be found through New England and New York. Aurora Robson is best known for her huge installations of plastic. She has developed a teaching course to encourage a shift of paradigms in art and science education while helping restrict the flow of plastic debris to our oceans. Gypsy Moths consists of three hanging pieces, made from plastics, saved from the wastestream, and powered by solar. Robson founded Project Vortex A few of the major collections her work can be found include: The Figge Art Museum, IA; Kingsbrae Gardens, NB, Canada; The South Carolina Aquarium, SC; and the Poipu Beach Hotel, HI. The exhibit opens Saturday, June 16th, 2:00- 5:00pm and is on view through April 30, 2019. Free to the general public. For more information contact: Rockland Center for the Arts (RoCA), 845-358-0877, info@rocklandartcenter.org or visit www.rocklandartcenter.org. RoCA is located at 27 South Greenbush Rd., West Nyack, NY 10994. The Catherine Konner Sculpture Park is open Dawn to Dusk 7 days a week. RoCA’s programs are made possible, in part, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Sculpture in the Woods

@ Rockland Center for the Arts

  • September 9, 2018, 11:30AM

On View in the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park Dates: May 21, 2017 – October 30, 2018 Rockland Center for the Arts, in partnership with Collaborative Concepts, have sited sculptures by 15 regional artists on RoCA's new nature trails, just off the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park. There are two guided tours but the public can come in for a self guided tour any day of the week, May 21, 2017 – October 30, 2018, free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. Give back to trails by joining the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference’s Habitat Helpers crew to remove trash from the trail and weeds from our native plant habitat around the Trails for People Exhibit. The Trails for People Interpretive Exhibit serves as a one-of-a kind gateway to the backcountry to the millions of annual visitors to Bear Mountain State Park, acting as an invitation to travel on the trails neighboring the Park’s popular picnic areas. Its 32 educational signs and hands-on trail structures inform novice and expert trail users alike about the history of the Park, how trails are built, and how volunteers are the lifeblood of our trail systems. Over 7,000 volunteer hours went into building the exhibit surrounding the historic Spider Hill House, just south of Hessian Lake; the construction of this section of the Appalachian Trail, known as the Demonstration Trail; and the development of the signage content. We will meet in the parking lot of the Bear Mountain Inn and divide into two groups. One group will carpool up to the top of the mountain to do trash pickup while the other will walk to the Trails for People Exhibit garden to remove foxtail grass and invasive plants such as barberry and stiltgrass from the native plant garden. Members of the Blauvelt family lived in the house from its construction in 1832 until 1970, when it was given to the Historical Society. During their more than one hundred years living in the house, the Blauvelts made many changes to it; when the HSRC gained ownership, it was restored to its original period and furnished with Blauvelt family pieces, as well as Rockland County and Lower Hudson Valley pieces from the Society’s collection. The Jacob Blauvelt House, a New York State “Paths through History” site, is open for guided tours on Sundays in September 2019 at 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm. Group tours are also available by appointment.

  • September 17, 2023, 12:00PM
  • September 24, 2023, 12:00PM, Tour ends 5:00pm.

Detailed Times/Hours: With the exception of Monday, September 11th, the tours will be scheduled on Sundays September 10, 17, and 24th. All tours including Monday 09/11/23 will be held from 12:00pm - 5:00pm.

The Fireboat John D. McKean played a critical role in the maritime evacuation from Manhattan Island following the World Trade Center attacks of 2001. With remarkable resourcefulness and ingenuity, mariners aboard an array of different vessels, including Fireboat John D. McKean, saved an untold number of lives and transported nearly half a million otherwise stranded people off the island in an entirely unplanned evacuation. This was the largest-ever boat lift in history, moving more people, more quickly than even the world-famous evacuation by the “Little Ships of Dunkirk” in 1940. The vessels’ crews that day displayed not only compassion, but also creative problem-solving and community solidarity, using the tools, skills, and ingenuity at their disposal to turn a deadly, chaotic situation into an efficient and successful rescue operation. On that day, McKean’s FDNY Marine Division crew first used the vessel’s massive deck capacity to transport people, many seriously injured, from the debris clouds to safer shores in New Jersey. Then, after watching the collapse of the second tower that killed so many fellow firefighters, they returned to the site to stretch hose lines and pump Hudson River water—the saltwater that would become the only firefighting water available once all hydrants got buried in the rubble. Recognizing the role that Fireboat John D. McKean played in this landmark boat lift is critical to ensuring that we, and future generations, never forget all the heroic rescue efforts of that day—even those made on the water. Preserving this physical treasure—an emblem of our history—will allow people to set foot on the same steel as those who took brave and selfless action to help others in the face of unthinkable horror. We owe our children the chance to walk, literally, in these mariners’ footsteps—to help them remember that each of us has the capacity to choose generosity and goodness amid disaster. Future generations, too easily removed from the awful stories of that day, need this vessel as evidence of the compassion, solidarity, and humanity that invariably rises up in the face of terror.
