The museum documents the many contributions of the area to the world such as: the hull armor for the Monitor, the modern horseshoe (made at the rate of nearly a million a week), the hook-headed railroad spike (now used worldwide), the lion’s share of the bells cast in the New World, more than a million detachable collars and cuffs a day, the largest textile mill building in nineteenth-century America, the most powerful water wheel in history (and in all likelihood the model for the world’s first Ferris wheel in 1893), and the first truly all-woman labor union.

Troy's Lower River Street

@ Collar City Ramble Table at the Troy Waterfront Farmer's Market

  • September 23, 2017, 12:30PM

As the young city of Troy grew in the early 1800s, River Street soon emerged as Troy’s most important thoroughfare. The Hudson River was the source of the city’s growing importance as a nexus point for commerce traveling between New York City and Canada, and across to New England and central and western New York. No street in Troy has seen more change over the centuries than River Street. The ebb and flow of the city's fortunes can be measured here, especially along its heart - the blocks between First and Congress Streets. Our tour will look at the architecture, the businesses and the people who made River Street so successful. The tour will include an old River Street warehouse and the plans for its renovation to become part of Troy’s renaissance. The tour will be led by Suzanne Spellen, an architectural historian, who blogs as Spellen of Troy.

Soundwalk at Grafton Lakes State Park

  • September 28, 2019, 3:00PM, Meet at the Welcome Center
  • September 29, 2019, 3:00PM, Meet at the Welcome Center.

Come join sound artist, Andrea Williams, on a soundwalk: a meditative walk that will focus on listening rather than just looking. When we one starts to prioritize listening over seeing and instead of rushing to get oneself from Point A to Point B, we begin to sense more of what is directly around us. We even feel our other senses engage more intensely, such as touch and smell, and it becomes easier to embody another being or a certain area. When we embody a certain area of the environment, we begin to understand its needs more and we can then become better caretakers of our environment. Following the 40-minute soundwalk is a Q&A session. There are a few listening activities along the way, but participants should be comfortable with being silent for most of the soundwalk with cell phones on silent or airplane mode. Portions of the trail may be muddy depending on weather; closed toed, watertight shoes are recommended along with bringing water to drink. You are also welcome to join the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park members’ potluck to follow, 4-7pm. Meet at the Grafton Lakes State Park Welcome Center, 254 Grafton Lakes State Park Way, Cropseyville, NY 12052.
