  • September 10, 2016, 9:00AM, Registration opens

Join us for a fun-filled day of paddling on the Hudson River, while raising money and awareness for a great cause. Our 9-mile current-assisted Poker Paddle route flows down a beautiful stretch of the river – launching from Long Dock in Beacon, past historic Bannerman’s Island and finishing at Dockside Park in Cold Spring for our post-paddle party. Participants pick up playing cards from volunteers at designated points along the way, hoping to produce the best ‘poker’ hand and win a fabulous prize. After the paddle,
celebrate a fun and rewarding day on the water at our annual post-paddle picnic lunch with beer, wine and a raffle for great prizes. Opening Reception - Collaborative Concepts @ Saunders Farm 2017

@ Saunders Farm

  • September 2, 2017, 2:00PM, til 6:00 pm

Collaborative Concepts is all about Large Sculptural Art Works; think Storm King, but with a herd of cattle! The combination of the two makes a great interaction of animals with art. Experimental art is encouraged. The result of combining art with animals, however, is hard to predict. It never creates repetition, only surprises and discoveries of how the two interact with each other. Collaborative Concepts offers opportunities that afford artists the freedom to create whatever they want, whether that is creating something grand, or silly, or experimental, and it even gives them permission to fail. Throw in some fun challenges --the huge scale of the farm, weather, and “cow proofing”, and the show becomes even more irresistible. Join Putnam History Museum and Heather Bruegl for an in-depth look at the French and Indian War through the Indigenous Nations who fought in it. The French and Indian War was a war between France and Great Britain over who was going to have dominion over the 'New World'. But what about the Indigenous Nations that were here? Where did they fall in this conflict? Learn about the Indigenous Nations that fought on both sides this conflict and the outcomes that it had. This is a hybrid event, and everyone will recieve a zoom link. If you plan on coming in person, however, please choose that option from the add-on section of the tickets. Heather Bruegl is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and first-line descendant Stockbridge Munsee. She is a graduate of Madonna University in Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in U.S. History. Her research comprises numerous topics related to American history, legacies of colonization, and Indigeneity, including the Dakota War of 1812, the history of American Boarding Schools, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (#MMIW). Heather has presented her work at academic institutions including the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the College of the Menominee Nation, as well as at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for Indigenous Peoples Day 2017. Heather consults for a variety of museums and universities and is a frequent lecturer at conferences on topics ranging from intergenerational racism and trauma to the fight for clean water in the Native community. She has been invited to share her research on Native American history, including policy and activism, equity in museums, and land back initiatives for such institutions as the Tate and the Brooklyn Public Library. Heather opened and spoke at the Women’s March Anniversary in Lansing, Michigan, in January 2018, and at the first ever Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, DC, in January 2019. In 2019, 2020, and 2021, Heather spoke at the Crazy Horse Memorial and Museum in Custer, South Dakota, for its Talking Circle Series. Heather is the former Director of Education of Forge Project, a decolonial art and education initiative on the unceded homelands of the Muh-he-con-ne-ok in Upstate New York, where she organized public programming and events and led the Forge Project Fellowship program. Now, Heather is a public historian, activist, and independent consultant who works with institutions and organizations for Indigenous sovereignty and collective liberation.

From Founders to Farmers: 17th through Early 20th Century Archaeology in the Hudson Valley

@ Putnam History Museum

  • September 13, 2023, 7:00PM

This lecture by archaeologist Eugene Boesch will discuss historic period archaeology in the Hudson Valley; from the early 17th through 20th centuries. Historic period archaeology may look at urban settlements, rural farmsteads, trading sites, commercial and industrial occupations, and more. Looking at the archaeological record can give us insight into those who lived at these places who are far less visible in the historical record. Questions on ethnicity, status, economic conditions, trade and exchange, ritual, conflict, lifestyle, changing landscapes and much more in the Hudson Valley are addressed by archaeological patterns recovered from these sites. Site and artifact data merge with documents such as census, probate inventories, diaries, wills, local histories, deeds and much more to shed light on individuals or families from the past and the conditions and circumstances in which they lived.
