Newly opened Waterfront Trail along the Hudson River, extending south from the City of Newburgh boat launch, through 7 acres of open field to the Newburgh Rowing Club. Spectacular views, bird-watching, connect with nature! Washington's Headquarters and the Historic District are up the hill; restaurants nearby. Enjoy one of the few remaining tracts of Natural Open Space in the mid-Hudson area. The City of Newburgh Waterfront Trail Ribbon Cutting Celebration will be held on September 24th, at 12pm.

@ The Bull Stone House

The 1722 Bull Stone House is the historic homestead of William Bull and Sarah Wells. Please come and take a tour of the house museum and grounds to learn about this important colonial family. There are marked trails through the woods to the Hamptonburgh cemetery where many of the family members are buried. Also on the property is the family barn constructed in 1718; the only example of a New World Dutch Barn still standing in orange County. Feel free to bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn.

@ Freedom Road Parking Area, Route 9W Northbound

Enjoy the "west shore" perspective with a challenging trek in Cornwall. Avid hiker and forester Matt Decker leads this expedition that includes Storm King Mountain and the North Point of Crows Nest Mountain, and features spectacular views of the Hudson River and the East Highlands. There will be a stop for photos and a quick picnic lunch. The hike is co-hosted by Hudson Highlands Land Trust and Orange County Land Trust.

@ West Point Museum

All visitors to the United States Military Academy are encouraged to tour the Museum to view the oldest and largest diversified public collection of miltaria in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum supports cadet academic, military and cultural instruction. Its collections include nearly all aspects of military history and encompass the history of West Point and the United States Military Academy, the evolution of warfare, and the development of the American Armed Forces. Based upon captured British materials brought to West Point after the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777, the Museum collections actually predate the founding of the United States Military Academy. When the Academy opened in 1802, many Revolutionary War trophies remained to be used for cadet instruction. By the 1820s, a teaching collection of artifacts existed at the Military Academy and after the Mexican War (1846 - 1848) West Point was designated by Executive Order as the permanent depository of war trophies. In 1854 the first public museum was opened and today it represents the culmination of more than two centuries of preserving our military heritage.

@ Blu Pointe Restaurant Dock, Beacon

Enjoy a cruise to Bannerman Island on Board The Bannerman Castle Trust’s motor vessel, the Estuary Steward. Bannerman Castle, built by Frank Bannerman Vl, as a warehouse to store his collection of antique military equipment from the Spanish American War. The castle was built to resemble the castles of Scotland. Enjoy a 30- minute cruise on the Hudson to Bannerman Island. There you will be treated to a 1.5 hour tour of the island given by one of our BCT historians. There is a 30 minute cruise back to port. Your Hudson River adventure departs from the Beacon Institute floating dock at the Beacon waterfront on Saturdays at 11 am and 12:30 pm. On Sundays at 11 am the boat departs from the Blue Point Restaurant Dock in Newburgh and again at the Beacon Institute dock at 12:30 pm.

@ Kowawese Unique Area

In the shadow of Storm King Mountain, we will sample the inshore shallows at Kowawese with a beach seine to see "who" (fish & shellfish) is home today. We may see a Bald Eagles from time-to-time, quite likely Osprey, and perhaps the start of the autumn Monarch butterfly migration. Bring swimwear to participate.

On the course, you will pass all of West Point's historic monuments, cadet barracks, chapels and take in views of the Hudson River valley and the mountains above. Come here for a scenic, safe, and traffic free walk. For those that wish to do the 6 mile walk, self-guided directions and map will be provided and the split occurs roughly 1/2 way through the guided portion. (A walk through the historic cemetery will be on the longer trail.)

On Saturday September 24 at 8 am, the Newburgh Rowing Club will again host the fun and family friendly “Paddle and Oars Challenge” said Coach Ed Kennedy, Programs Director. “This event is open to the public, and kayakers of all levels, from newbies to highly experienced, are welcome to attend. It is a ‘challenge’ so you do not have to complete the 5-Mile Course unless you choose to do so. We will also have sculling events, for the rowers. All participants get to enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast and we will have a Kayak up for raffle, beautiful event T-shirts included, and merchandise for sale and tours of the Boathouse, along with coupons for free Learn to Row lessons. Everyone should come on down and enjoy the beautiful Ward Brothers Memorial Park and the Hudson River with us.” “More than 200 people attended last year, this event just keeps getting better,” said Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo, who is also the Director of America Rows and Swims Newburgh. “The purpose of the Challenge is to commemorate the ‘Great 5-Mile World Rowing Championship,’ which took place here in Newburgh, in the year 1857. @ Fort Montgomery State Historic Site

Come for a unique, extended tour of one of the Hudson Valley's most dramatic battle sites!  Drawing mainly on 1st hand accounts and archaeological data, this ramble will bring to life the Revolutionary War attack on Fort Montgomery using the words of the soldiers who were there and what they left behind. @ Sterling Forest State Park

The Fire Tower Ramble is a moderate 4 mile loop highlighted by scenic views of Sterling Forest. Hikers are able to observe the surrounding Hudson Highlands from a 60 foot fire tower built in 1922.

The 6th Annual Newburgh Open Studios tour offers a unique opportunity to see the work and meet many of the artists in the City of Newburgh's growing arts community. The studios are located in some amazing historic buildings, most of which are rarely open to the public. This is a self-guided tour, much of it walkable. Maps will be available starting on Saturday, September 24 at 10:00am at Newburgh Art Supply, 5 Grand Street.

@ Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site

Come fly a kite and add some color to the majestic Hudson River’s breathtaking view. The first 150 children under the age of 15 will receive a free kite and prizes will be awarded in various kite-related categories. Museum admission and admission to the headquarters used by General and Mrs. Washington during the last days of the Revolutionary War is free, thanks to the support of Central Hudson and the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands. @ Bear Mountain State Park

Beginning at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail near the southern end of Hessian Lake, the steep ascent up Bear Mountain starts by way of many hundreds of impressive stone steps along the Appalachian Trail, which takes you through a section of large boulders, over a bridge, and to beautiful views of Iona Island and the Hudson River. Transitioning to a more gradual ascent, you walk through pine flats, blueberry and mountain laurel to the summit. Here you will enjoy panoramic views to the south and west over Dunderberg and West Mountains. Perkins Memorial Tower provides more views with interpretive signage. After a break for lunch, a snack or just to enjoy the views, the Major Welch Trail will take you to more vistas to the north and east as you begin the descent. Traversing rock outcrops and stone steps, the steep path down ends at a paved footpath at Hessian Lake, which takes you back to the start.

Beginning and ending with some fairly steep stretches and some rock scrambling, this 2.5 mile loop meanders from stunning view to stunning view, summitting both Butter Hill and Storm King Mountain. This hike is moderate to strenuous.

@ Twin Island Fishing Park, River Road, just south of Village of Walden

This paddle is one of the Wallkill River Watershed Alliance's Boat Brigade's regular monthly paddles in which participants enjoy the river as well as monitor the river for garbage, illicit discharges, potential algae blooms and storm water infrastructure. If anything suspicious is found, the Alliance will file reports of their observations with local building inspectors and MS4 officers.

@ Twin Island park near Walden on River road

This is a great opportunity to get out to see a relatively unused scenic section of the Wallkill river. We're mostly about recreation but the WRWA has a mission to observe and report conditions on the river to promote it's future health. Participants are encouraged to photograph suspicious conditions and share that with the event host. Also, we promote a clean river so retrieving litter from the waterway is encouraged. No one is requires to do more than they like.

@ Long Mountain in Harriman State Park

Meeting at the Turkey Hill/Long Mountain parking area, this 2-mile trek along the Long Path and woods road makes gradual then steeper ascents to the Raymond H. Torrey Memorial atop Long Mountain. You will enjoy east-facing views of Bear Mountain, Popolopen Torne and Anthony's Nose, with Turkey Hill Lake below. The rapid descent is along a rocky section of trail to Deep Hollow Brook at the base of the mountain and return to the parking area is by woods road.

@ Begins in Lake Skannatati parking area in Harriman State Park

This hike begins with an easy walk on the Long Path through open woodlands along the shores of Lake Skannatati and crossing Pine Swamp Brook. Gradually climbing, it takes you past huge rock ledges and through hilly blueberry patches, until it intersects with the Dunning Trail. Following this old mine road, you ascend to Pine Swamp, home to pitcher plants, sundews, beaver and historic mines. Intersecting with the Arden-Surebridge trail, you bend around the shoulder of Pine Swamp Mountain and rapidly descend through open forest to the parking area.

Read an illustrated children’s story, “Teeny Tiny Toady” by Jill Esbaum, and look for clues about these special animals as you stroll along our meadow trail. 11am & 1pm guided walk along our StoryWalk™ Trail and meet one of the animals from the book!

@ Bear Mountain State Park

We’ll meet at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail near the southern end of Hessian Lake. From there, we'll walk north along the western shore of Hessian Lake to the start of the Major Welch Trail. Turning left into the woods, the ascent begins on stone steps, but quickly becomes rocky footpath. Gradually the climb becomes steeper, passing through stands of mountain laurel, as the footpath alternates between rocky footpath, well-graded footpath, stone steps and rock outcrop. We'll enjoy the north facing and panoramic views of the Hudson River, before we complete the climb to the summit. Here you can explore Perkins Memorial Tower and enjoy the all-encompassing views of the Hudson Valley. After a rest and lunch, we'll continue to the Appalachian Trail and begin our descent. After crossing and then joining parts of Perkins Drive, the trail descends over 800 magnificent hand-hewn stone steps built in place by NY-NJ Trail Conference Volunteers over a 5 year period. We'll pass a seasonal waterfall, cross a wooden bridge and enjoy views of Iona Island and the Hudson River. At the end of these giant steps, we'll be right back where we started.

Kayakers and rowers of all levels, from newbies to highly experienced, are welcome to participate. We will have a 1-mile course. Or just come out and paddle. A post event pancake breakfast will also be provided. The Paddle & Oars Challenge is a fundraiser to increase public awareness and access to the Ward Brothers Memorial Park, part of the City of Newburgh Hudson River Waterfront Trail. Your participation helps support student athlete clean water projects including shoreline restoration, Hudson River stewardship, Plastic Free Hudson River and other enrichment programming. Not suitable for children under 12 (unless accompanied by an adult).

In the shadow of Storm King Mountain, we will sample the inshore shallows at Kowawese with a beach seine to see "who" (fish & shellfish) is home today. We may see a Bald Eagle from time-to-time, Osprey, and perhaps the start of the autumn Monarch butterfly migration. Bring swimwear to participate.

Registration either in front of, or in back of, the Harness Museum. Village parking, be aware of meters and parking restrictions. The walk route passes numerous historical places in Goshen as well as part of the Goshen Heritage rail-trail. All participants receive a self-guided set of directions with a map and text.

All visitors to the United States Military Academy are encouraged to tour the Museum to view the oldest and largest diversified public collection of miltaria in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum supports cadet academic, military and cultural instruction. Its collections include nearly all aspects of military history and encompass the history of West Point and the United States Military Academy, the evolution of warfare, and the development of the American Armed Forces. Based upon captured British materials brought to West Point after the British defeat at Saratoga in 1777, the Museum collections actually predate the founding of the United States Military Academy. When the Academy opened in 1802, many Revolutionary War trophies remained to be used for cadet instruction. By the 1820s, a teaching collection of artifacts existed at the Military Academy and after the Mexican War (1846 - 1848) West Point was designated by Executive Order as the permanent depository of war trophies. In 1854 the first public museum was opened and today it represents the culmination of more than two centuries of preserving our military heritage.

@ Long Mountain in Harriman State Park

Meeting at the Turkey Hill/Long Mountain parking area, this 2-mile trek along the Long Path and woods road makes gradual then steeper ascents to the Raymond H. Torrey Memorial atop Long Mountain. You will enjoy east-facing views of Bear Mountain, Popolopen Torne and Anthony's Nose, with Turkey Hill Lake below. The rapid descent is along a rocky section of trail to Deep Hollow Brook at the base of the mountain and return to the parking area is by woods road.

The Fire Tower Ramble is a moderate 4 mile loop highlighted by scenic views of Sterling Forest. Hikers are able to observe the surrounding Hudson Highlands from a 60 foot fire tower built in 1922.

@ Begins in Lake Skannatati parking area in Harriman State Park

This hike begins with an easy walk on the Long Path through open woodlands along the shores of Lake Skannatati and crossing Pine Swamp Brook. Gradually climbing, it takes you past huge rock ledges and through hilly blueberry patches, until it intersects with the Dunning Trail. Following this old mine road, you ascend to Pine Swamp, home to pitcher plants, sundews, beaver and historic mines. Intersecting with the Arden-Surebridge trail, you bend around the shoulder of Pine Swamp Mountain and rapidly descend through open forest to the parking area.

@ Storm King State Park

Beginning and ending with some fairly steep stretches and some rock scrambling, this 2.5 mile loop meanders from stunning view to stunning view, summitting both Butter Hill and Storm King Mountain. This hike is moderate to strenuous. (If you are travelling from the north, then please be aware that the parking area is on the northbound side of the divided highway, Rte. 9W. You will need to continue on Rte. 9W South, past the parking area, to the exit for Rte. 293/218. Here you will follow signs for Rte. 9W North, which will bring you to the parking area.)

This remote tour is ideal for bird watchers and those who enjoy close observation of local flora and fauna. Begin this tour on the beautiful Hudson River as we make our way north along the shoreline, then duck under a railroad trestle and enter the mouth of the Moodna. Your guides will lead you through the marsh, meandering in and out of channels. With ever-changing water levels, tides, and rainfall, each tour to Moodna Marsh is different, but always enchanting. You may even spot one of the local bald eagles that nest near the marshlands!

Expert Marianne Greenfield, proprietor of Gravestone Cleaning Service, will instruct 16 participants on the proper techniques of caring for gravestones. She will begin with a quick talk about the only recommended method of cleaning and then the hands-on portion of the workshop begins. Expect to get dirty - the results will be worth it!

Opened in 1870, this beautiful 74-acre rural cemetery surrounds a large pond and houses the graves of many interesting people including a pioneer woman war correspondent, members of the colonial Clinton family, writers, congressmen, artists and the Lithuanian-born "mother of women's basketball." Two local historians will narrate the lives of dozens of people now resting quietly in New Windsor.

@ Bear Mountain State Park

We’ll meet at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail near the southern end of Hessian Lake. From there, we'll walk north along the western shore of Hessian Lake to the start of the Major Welch Trail. Turning left into the woods, the ascent begins on stone steps, but quickly becomes rocky footpath. Gradually the climb becomes steeper, passing through stands of mountain laurel, as the footpath alternates between rocky footpath, well-graded footpath, stone steps and rock outcrop. We'll enjoy the north facing and panoramic views of the Hudson River, before we complete the climb to the summit. Here you can explore Perkins Memorial Tower and enjoy the all-encompassing views of the Hudson Valley. After a rest and lunch, we'll continue to the Appalachian Trail and begin our descent. After crossing and then joining parts of Perkins Drive, the trail descends over 800 magnificent hand-hewn stone steps built in place by NY-NJ Trail Conference Volunteers over a 5 year period. We'll pass a seasonal waterfall, cross a wooden bridge and enjoy views of Iona Island and the Hudson River. At the end of these giant steps, we'll be right back where we started.

All are invited to come and enjoy the outdoor fun at this annual event when color fills the sky overlooking the Hudson River. FREE kites are given to the first 150 children 15 years and under, and Museum and tours, are free today compliments Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands.
