  • September 12, 2016, 2:00PM

The world’s largest Viking ship built in modern times, the 115-foot Draken or “Dragon” in Norwegian, will be arriving at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on Friday, September 9 and staying until the morning of Thursday, September 15 before making her way to New York City. Built in Haugesund, Norway, she left her home port on April 24, 2016 and has been sailing across the North Atlantic Ocean on the historical route explored by the Vikings 1,000 years ago. Sigurd Aase, Norwegian entrepreneur, initiator and owner of Viking Kings A/S, started this project to recreate the journey of his ancestors to Vinland, the Viking name for North America. Draken is 115 feet long; 26 feet 2 inches wide; her Douglas Fir mast is 78 feet 8 inches high; the hull is oak and her sail is silk. Her top speed has been recorded at 14 knots. She is adorned with traditional ornamentations, such as a Dragon’s head and tail, woodcarvings and motifs from archaeological found ships, especially the Gokstad ship. Draken is rowed with 25 pairs of oars, and during her Expedition America 2016, she will be crewed by 32 skilled sailors. Draken will be available for public deck tours on Friday, September 9th from 12 pm to 7 pm, on Saturday, September 10th from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Monday, September 12th from 2 pm to 6 pm. Lecture by Captain Björn Ahlander on the Draken's trans-Atlantic voyage at 7 pm.

On Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11, 2016, the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the Trolley Museum of New York will host a joint commemoration weekend to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Historic fireboat John J. Harvey will be docked at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on both days. The Harvey is the retired FDNY fireboat that assisted with the evacuation of lower Manhattan on 9/11, and pumped water to fight the World Trade Center site fires. Free public deck tours will be offered on Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and on Sunday from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. From 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday, there will be a ceremonial “reading of the roll” to remember the over 400 first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. HRMM will offer free museum admission to first responders and their families, and a $2 discount off all museum admission rates for the general public on both Saturday and Sunday. The museum will present multiple screenings of Eyepop Productions 12-minute documentary film Boatlift in HRMM’s Kingston Home Port and Education Center, and will host other “courage and rescue” themed activities throughout the weekend. The Trolley Museum of New York will hold a formal 12:00 noon dedication ceremony on Sunday with City of Kingston Mayor Steve Noble for its PATH train car 143, the “last car” that had been parked underneath the World Trade Center on 9/11. The Volunteer Fireman’s Hall and Museum of Kingston will display vintage fire equipment in the TMNY parking lot. A full schedule of events for this weekend can be found at: http://www.hrmm.org/september-11th-memorial.html. Times and activities are subject to change.

Walking Tour of Sleightsburgh Spit

@ Sleightsburgh Park, Port Ewen, NY

  • September 13, 2016, 5:30PM

Join the Hudson River Maritime Museum and the John Burroughs Natural History Society for a guided walking tour of Sleightsburgh Spit in Port Ewen. Sleightsburgh Spit is a magnet for fall migrating birds. Its broad, exposed shoreline creates a unique habitat in Ulster County and is a popular stopover for migrating birds of all kinds. Tour begins at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, September 13th (low tide is at 6 pm) and ends around 7 pm. Tour guides will have high powered flashlights for the return walk at sunset, but participants are encouraged to bring their own flashlights. Sleightsburgh Spit itself has been built up over the years on the remains of a 19th century barge graveyard. Wooden canal boats and barges built for the Delaware & Hudson Canal and Hudson River shipping were abandoned near the mouth of Rondout Creek when they had outlived their usefulness. The tour begins with Sarah Wassberg leading a walk along Rondout Creek so participants can see the barge graveyard at its best at low tide and learn how the “graveyard” came to be. Then Mark DeDea will lead a longer walk down the wide path in the center of the spit and interpret migrating wildlife and local flora along the way, ending at a rock beach overlooking both Rondout Creek and the Hudson River where participants will hopefully be able to watch shorebirds and other waterfowl at their evening feed. This tour is through ungroomed trails with poison ivy, so participants are strongly encouraged to wear sturdy closed-toed shoes, socks, and long pants.

John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • September 24, 2016, 10:00AM

The rocks were one of literary naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago. Since they were deposited in a shallow sea, the sediments were repeatedly caught in continental collisions which bent them and stood them literally on end. As if that wasn't enough, they were most recently scraped clean by a mile-thick sheet of glacial ice which melted a mere 14,000 years ago. Join Vassar College geology professor Jeff Walker for hike to read the many stories in the rocks of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. The newly developed trails are part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail System. Meet at Slabsides.

John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • September 23, 2017, 10:00AM

Nature in Image and Prose

@ Catskill Interpretive Center

  • September 23, 2017, 1:00PM

Photographer Rudd Hubbell, who’s been documenting the natural beauty of the Catskills since the 1970s, will be in conversation with nature writer Leslie T. Sharpe. A descendent of the area’s first settlers, Hubbell has captured thousands of photographs of our spectacular wilderness. He enjoys looking closer than the broad view, and always tries to focus on the things most of us overlook or take for granted. “Every scene is constantly changing and transforming, and I strive to capture that,” Hubbell says. Sharpe is a writer, editor and educator. A member of PEN American Center, she is the author of Editing Fact and Fiction: A Concise Guide to Book Editing (Cambridge University Press, 1994), which is regarded as a “modern editing classic” and “On Writing Smart: Tips and Tidbits,” featured in The Business of Writing (Allworth, 2012). Her new book, The Quarry Fox and Other Critters of the Wild Catskills (The Overlook Press, 2017), is a lyric narrative look at the wild animals of the Catskill Mountains. Sharpe will read from this work and discuss the genre of nature writing as it relates to the Catskills.

Guided tours will feature glimpses into all seven historic stone houses, two of which have been entirely out of public view for many years. Performances, skits, and vendor demonstrations will take place throughout the day while artisans and craftspeople sell handmade goods. Members of the 5th NY Regiment will bring reenactors from multiple time periods, engaging in musket firing, candle making, sewing, blacksmithing, and other activities. There will be musical performances by the 77th NY Regimental Balladeers and Ministers of Apollo. New Paltz Brewing Company (Pfälzerbräu, meaning “Brewery of the Pfalz”) will be on site selling their handcrafted beer and small plates out of the DuBois Fort Visitor Center. The company was founded by two brothers from Germany who became intrigued by the French Huguenots’ time spent in Germany prior to making their way to the American colonies in the mid-17th century. The brothers believed that when the Huguenots arrived in the colonies they would have brought with them a love and appreciation for German-style beers and ales. Today, New Paltz Brewing Company (Pfälzerbräu) recreates these traditional ales and similarly-inspired foods to share at its taproom in Wawarsing, NY. Because the DuBois Fort Visitor Center historically served as an inn, restaurant, and community gathering place for much of its 300-year history, it is a fitting place for visitors to learn about and enjoy traditional food and drink. To assist with transportation throughout the day, Ulster County Area Transit (UCAT) has agreed to add stops at the Ulster BOCES parking lot and Broadhead Avenue to its Saturday New Paltz Loop for the day. Old New Paltz Stone House Day is a day for people from all backgrounds to come together to celebrate our vibrant and diverse community in the very location where so much history unfolded.

John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • September 15, 2018, 9:00AM

  • September 28, 2019, 9:00AM

The rocks were one of naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago.

Fleece to Shawl Event with the Elmendorph Handspinners

  • September 18, 2021, 10:00AM
  • September 19, 2021, 10:00AM

Join us in welcoming the Elmendorph Handspinners Guild of Red Hook New York. Over the two days the guild will hold a quasi “Fleece to Shawl” competition. On Saturday begins the competition between 5 individuals (a weaver, a plyer, and 3 spinners). The wool used for the weaving will be in lock form requiring carding, spinning and plying. The yarn produced will then be woven into a shawl which will measure at least 18 inches by 72 inches. In a full-fledged competition this would be accomplished in 3-4 hours and be judged for the evenness of the spinning, the complexity of the pattern wove, the use of color, and the evenness the weaving. On Sunday there will be a demonstration in the art of spinning with a wheel and with a drop spindle. A drop spindle has been used almost since the beginning of time. It is still in use today in many countries throughout the world. Its advantages include low cost to begin this type of spinning as well as it’s portability.

John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • September 3, 2022, 9:00AM

The rocks were one of naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago. Since they were deposited in a shallow sea, the sediments were repeatedly caught in continental collisions which bent them and stood them literally on end. As if that wasn't enough, they were most recently scraped clean by a mile-thick sheet of glacial ice which melted a mere 14,000 years ago. Join Vassar College professor of earth sciences Jeff Walker for hike to read the many stories in the rocks of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. The trails are part of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail System. SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

John Burroughs Slabsides Geology Ramble

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

  • September 2, 2023, 9:00AM

Detailed Times/Hours: 9:00 am to approximately 11:00 pm. Rain or shine. From 11:30 am until 4:00 pm you are invited to tour John Burroughs' rustic 1895 cabin retreat "Slabsides," a National Historic Landmark and a Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area of Special interest. Through works written there about nature, John Burroughs had a profound impact on the emerging conservation movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He inspired generations of readers to head out of doors and national leaders to preserve land and its wildlife.

These workshops are a hands-on opportunity for citizens, local historians, educators, librarians, genealogists, community groups and historical societies to learn professional and practical steps for stewardship, identification, documentary, and the cleaning and preservation strategies that are necessary to preserve a vanishing heritage. This is a full day workshop: a morning full of practical, useful information and an afternoon in the cemetery learning functional hands-on preservation methods. A light breakfast, lunch, and resource packet are included. Participants should dress comfortably and wear sneakers or work boots as we will be working outdoors with water and dirt. Please note: This workshop will take place rain or shine - if it's rainy, we will have large canopy tents to work under! Thank you to the Maurice D.
