Van Schaick Mansion Tours

@ 1 Van Schaick Ave, Cohoes NY

  • September 11, 2016, 10:00AM
  • October 9, 2016, 10:00AM

The Van Schaick Mansion is one of the most historic homes in New York State with a rich history that is tied to both the French and Indian War & the American Revolution. Built circa 1735, the house was used as military headquarters for a number of English generals during the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution the mansion once again served as military headquarters and was inhabited by Generals Schuyler, Gates, Poor, St. Clair and Colonels Morgan, Gansevoort and Arnold while formulating the plans for the battle of Saratoga. In the days leading up to the battle some 5,000 Continental soldiers were garrisoned around the mansion. Due to the historic significance of this venue, the Van Schaick Mansion was named to the National Register of Historical Places in 1970, to the New York State Revolutionary War Heritage Trail in 2008, and in 2013 was named a member of the “NYS Paths to History”. For the past 278 years, the mansion has been lovingly cared for by descendants of the Van Schaick Family, various individuals; and since 2001, the Gen. Peter Gansevoort Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Van Schaick Mansion Project, under the auspices of the General Peter Gansevoort Chapter, NSDAR, was established to collect, preserve, and present the cultural history of Van Schaick Island. The Project pursues this mission through the preservation and interpretation of its site, the Van Schaick Mansion, as a site for the presentation of collections, exhibitions and programs to benefit the community.

Sometimes a name fails to describe the event and that is certainly the case with this show. Given that the event was previously owned by Altamont Orchards, apples were and are still an integral part of the show. After parking their cars, customers are ushered into a large barn that houses arts, crafts, specialty foods, and apples. This serves as the shopping component, and an opportunity for the public to buy directly from the maker. After exiting the Marketplace, one follows a path lined with more booths also offering their wares for sale. Along the way there will be juggling acts and a wandering magician, and even a stage for music. Then, the appetizing cider donuts and cider from Altamont Orchards in addition to a dozen food booths and food trucks offering steak, fries, BBQ, potato pancakes, sausage and onions, Mid-Eastern food chicken kebabs, falafel, tempeh Reuben sandwiches, lemonade, ice cream, pizza, and a lot more. And then the New York Wine and Spirits building and tent, which requires proof of age. where customers receive a commemorative tasting glass and can proceed to sample and taste wines and spirits from 25 NY producers. Usually there is an incredible amount of buying as the customers purchase their favorites. There is a $7 entry fee for the wine tasting. Further along there is a fantastic Kids Zone with bouncy houses, climbing walls, games, bow and arrows, and educational exhibits with live owls and hawks. That is on one side of the path, and on the other is a Car Show. Saturday features cars up to 1975 and Sunday offers cars from 1976 until today. More than 300 cars are expected to participate. After all that, there’s the road back, passing all the booths and entertaimnet, until, finally, The Marketplace barn, making last minute purches, buying some apples, and heading home after a fun filled day.
