Detailed Times/Hours: Walking tour begins at Academy Park, across the street from Albany City Hall. Walking tour lasts from 10:30 - 12:00 and will finish at a local business in downtown Albany.
Historic Cherry Hill invites you to walk in the footsteps of William James Knapp, the great-grandchild of Dinah Jackson, who was the last person enslaved at Cherry Hill. Knapp lived in the Cherry Hill home between 1880 – 1844. More importantly, he was a working musician and called the City of Albany his home. Inspired by the research conducted at Cherry Hill, your tour guide will walk the very streets as Knapp, pointing out spaces he likely shopped and socialized. Historic sites and spaces of the Gilded Age will be highlighted, including buildings featured in HBO’s The Gilded Age. The tour will feature recordings from Knapp’s sheet music, which are part of Cherry Hill’s collection. The tour will end at a local business, where guests will mingle and toast to the Knapp legacy. Tour begins at 1 Academy Park, across the street from Albany City Hall. Ticket includes guided tour. Drinks can be purchased on your own at the end of the tour.

Want to get into birding, but don’t know where to start? Come explore the Yellow Trail at Karner Barrens as we walk through the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and look for birds! Join us this morning to learn how to use binoculars and identify birds by sight and sound. We will be taking a 2.6-mile moderate hike through various habitats to search for birds of all shapes and sizes, and practice listening for and recognizing bird calls. We’ll slow down, pausing frequently to listen and look for birds and observe their activities! We will have binoculars and field guides to help us identify any birds we may encounter!

Join us for a special focus tour exploring the important stories of the enslaved and servants who lived and worked at the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion. This tour explores the lives of the people who made life at the Ten Broeck Mansion possible and considers their extended roles in the Albany region. Learn the stories of Susannah and her children, and of Rosanna Vosburgh, the African American abolitionist, philanthropist, and paid household manager at Ten Broeck Mansion. The tour includes a visit to the site of enslaved workers' working and living quarters on the grounds of the Ten Broeck Mansion and a discussion of historic equipment and spaces used by servants in the Mansion.

Description: Cohoes began its rise to industrial prominence as a canal town. The Erie and Champlain Canals traversed Cohoes, and this network of waterways, along with abundant waterpower, made Cohoes a leader in the Industrial Revolution. This tour will feature canal towpaths where mules pulling barges once trod, limestone locks built by hand, and other historic canal features. On the tour, you will learn the history of this 19th century technological achievement, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, and find out the different routes the canal took through Cohoes over time. At stops along the canal route through Cohoes, you will hear stories of life in a lively canal town, learn about some of the people instrumental in developing and building the canal, and discover how transportation and power canals and the Cohoes Falls led to the growth of the Harmony Mills and other industries in Cohoes. The tour will begin at the Cohoes Visitor Center.

Detailed Times/Hours: Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site is open Wednesdays through Sundays 10am-5pm. Tours happen on the hour, beginning at 11am, with the last tour beginning at 4pm. Focus tours are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2pm. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended. Please call the museum at 518-434-0834 to make your reservation.
Hear Them Now: Stories of the Enslaved at Schuyler Mansion Over the course of their lifetimes, the Schuylers enslaved more than sixty people. On this tour, we’ll gain insight into the lives of some of the people once enslaved by the Schuylers, like Silva and her family, Harre, Prince, and Caty Betty. Join us to learn their personal stories during this interactive tour. This tour is available at 2PM on Thursdays and Saturdays in September, and is about one hour and fifteen minutes long. The tour is by reservation only. You can make a reservation by calling us at 518-434-0834. Please note: reservations can be made only within the current month.

Immerse yourself in history! Join these special sequential tours, allowing you to visit three of Albany's finest historic sites exploring freedom and opportunity from the 1700s-1800s. Learn about the lives of enslaved persons, and the accomplishments and contributions of free persons of color in Albany. Learn how Albany grew and transformed: the lives of Irish immigrants, reformers and abolitionists, and Albany's important role for freedom-seekers on the underground railroad. Start at 2 pm: Irish American Heritage Museum (until 3:00 pm) Middle: 3:30-4:30 pm Tour the Ten Broeck Mansion and visit the 4 acres of grounds and gardens - you are welcome to arrive early - bring and enjoy a snack in our gardens before your tour (we practice leave no trace). Our gardens are open from 9:30 am to 4:30, April through October. End at 5 pm: Underground Railroad Education Center (Myers Residence - concludes at 6 pm) Important tour information: All visitors will be expected to comply with site regulations and safety practices. please note: historic sites have uneven walkways and historic staircases: walking shoes recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please ensure you leave enough time to travel between sites (about 2 minutes driving or 5-11 minutes walking). Tours start promptly and are held rain or shine. Parking: The Irish American Heritage Museum has paid parking. The Ten Broeck Mansion has ample free parking in an off-street lot, about a 11 minute walk from the Irish American Heritage Museum. This tour explores the contributions of workers, including African American Master Gardeners (a historic term), and their pivotal roles in developing the Hudson Valley estates. Discover the diversity of plants imported from around the world while exploring the historic 1764 boundaries of the site, including visits to the former orchard and archaeological locations of key landscape features from the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about Thomas Worth Olcott, a noted banker in Abraham Lincoln’s close circle, and his passion for horticulture, along with the lives of the gardeners who created the famed gardens at the Ten Broeck Mansion. Operated by the Albany County Historical Association as a community-centered museum and gardens, the Ten Broeck Mansion has welcomed the public for 77 years, showcasing the enduring relevance of this historic site to our community.

Join City Historian, Anthony Opalka, and a representative from the city's water department for an encore presentation of a walk/talk of Albany's Beaver Creek. While construction on Lincoln Park is underway and the original path of Beaver Creek has been daylighted to some extent, this is the perfect time to discuss the use of Beaver Creek in the 17th and 18th centuries and to discuss the evolution of the city and its effects on waterways. We will follow the original path of Beaver Creek and discuss how it has been redirected by humans over time. The talk begins at Schuyler Mansion, in the Visitors Center. Space is limited. Help plant tulips at the Ten Broeck Mansion! Families are invited to join us to learn about the history of the Ten Broeck Mansion gardens. Did you know tulips have been planted in our gardens since the 1800s? And you have to plant them in the fall to have a beautiful display in the spring? We will learn about the origins of tulips, how they came to Europe and North America, and how tulips can be used to study our environment. Plus, free garden activity kits, art projects, and free take-home bulb planting kits. To make your visit enjoyable for all: 1) Please wear shoes/sneakers and clothes for planting (getting a little muddy). 2) For children ages 2 and up. An adult must be with each group of children during the program. 3) Please park in our parking lot (off Livingston Avenue) - GPS Directions 136 Livingston. 4) Event held rain or shine (we will have a tent over a garden area in case of rain). Program made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts.
