Join us for a special focus tour exploring the important stories of the enslaved and servants who lived and worked at the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion. This tour explores the lives of the people who made life at the Ten Broeck Mansion possible and considers their extended roles in the Albany region. Learn the stories of Susannah and her children, and of Rosanna Vosburgh, the African American abolitionist, philanthropist, and paid household manager at Ten Broeck Mansion. The tour includes a visit to the site of enslaved workers' working and living quarters on the grounds of the Ten Broeck Mansion and a discussion of historic equipment and spaces used by servants in the Mansion.

Harvest Craft Fair

Join us at America's first Shaker Settlement for our annual Harvest Craft Fair! There will be over 75 artisans there! Also, we will have family activities, live music, craft demonstrations, specialty tours, delicious food, a petting farm, and sheep shearing! There is tons to do for the whole family. Parking is free and admission is donation based. Proceeds benefit the Shaker Heritage Society and our mission to revitalize this historic land.

Exploring the Canals of Cohoes

Description: Cohoes began its rise to industrial prominence as a canal town. The Erie and Champlain Canals traversed Cohoes, and this network of waterways, along with abundant waterpower, made Cohoes a leader in the Industrial Revolution. This tour will feature canal towpaths where mules pulling barges once trod, limestone locks built by hand, and other historic canal features. On the tour, you will learn the history of this 19th century technological achievement, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, and find out the different routes the canal took through Cohoes over time. At stops along the canal route through Cohoes, you will hear stories of life in a lively canal town, learn about some of the people instrumental in developing and building the canal, and discover how transportation and power canals and the Cohoes Falls led to the growth of the Harmony Mills and other industries in Cohoes. The tour will begin at the Cohoes Visitor Center.

Immerse yourself in history! Join these special sequential tours, allowing you to visit three of Albany's finest historic sites exploring freedom and opportunity from the 1700s-1800s. Learn about the lives of enslaved persons, and the accomplishments and contributions of free persons of color in Albany. Learn how Albany grew and transformed: the lives of Irish immigrants, reformers and abolitionists, and Albany's important role for freedom-seekers on the underground railroad. Start at 2 pm: Irish American Heritage Museum (until 3:00 pm) Middle: 3:30-4:30 pm Tour the Ten Broeck Mansion and visit the 4 acres of grounds and gardens - you are welcome to arrive early - bring and enjoy a snack in our gardens before your tour (we practice leave no trace). Our gardens are open from 9:30 am to 4:30, April through October. End at 5 pm: Underground Railroad Education Center (Myers Residence - concludes at 6 pm) Important tour information: All visitors will be expected to comply with site regulations and safety practices. please note: historic sites have uneven walkways and historic staircases: walking shoes recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please ensure you leave enough time to travel between sites (about 2 minutes driving or 5-11 minutes walking). Tours start promptly and are held rain or shine. Parking: The Irish American Heritage Museum has paid parking. The Ten Broeck Mansion has ample free parking in an off-street lot, about a 11 minute walk from the Irish American Heritage Museum. The Myers Residence (last stop) is a 5 minute walk from the Ten Broeck Mansion, or limited on-street parking is available. You may park at the Ten Broeck Mansion and walk down to the Irish American Heritage Museum and back (moderate walking ability required - slight uphill walks), but we ask that all tour visitors exit the parking lot after their tour at Ten Broeck Mansion. The Mayor’s Garden: History of the Ten Broeck Mansion Gardens & Workers

Embark on a special tour as we delve into the rich history of the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion and its grounds, uncovering its deep-rooted connections to Albany and the surrounding region. This tour explores the contributions of workers, including African American Master Gardeners (a historic term), and their pivotal roles in developing the Hudson Valley estates. Discover the diversity of plants imported from around the world while exploring the historic 1764 boundaries of the site, including visits to the former orchard and archaeological locations of key landscape features from the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about Thomas Worth Olcott, a noted banker in Abraham Lincoln’s close circle, and his passion for horticulture, along with the lives of the gardeners who created the famed gardens at the Ten Broeck Mansion. Operated by the Albany County Historical Association as a community-centered museum and gardens, the Ten Broeck Mansion has welcomed the public for 77 years, showcasing the enduring relevance of this historic site to our community.

Fall Tulip Fest: Family Tulp Bulb Planting

Help plant tulips at the Ten Broeck Mansion! Families are invited to join us to learn about the history of the Ten Broeck Mansion gardens. Did you know tulips have been planted in our gardens since the 1800s? And you have to plant them in the fall to have a beautiful display in the spring? We will learn about the origins of tulips, how they came to Europe and North America, and how tulips can be used to study our environment. Plus, free garden activity kits, art projects, and free take-home bulb planting kits. To make your visit enjoyable for all: 1) Please wear shoes/sneakers and clothes for planting (getting a little muddy). 2) For children ages 2 and up. An adult must be with each group of children during the program. 3) Please park in our parking lot (off Livingston Avenue) - GPS Directions 136 Livingston. 4) Event held rain or shine (we will have a tent over a garden area in case of rain). Program made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts.
