Event Type Historic Site Tour/History Description Join with Calvert Vaux Preservation Alliance (CVPA) to explore a pivotal moment in American design history, beautifully sited on a promontory overlooking the Hudson River and Catskills. Why does The Point matter? In completing The Point’s design in 1855, Calvert Vaux experimented with American Picturesque concepts that were featured two years later in his winning Greensward Plan for Central Park with Frederick Law Olmsted. Today, CVPA is taking steps to ensure the future of The Point, designed by Vaux for Lydig and Geraldine Livingston Hoyt. Earlier this year, a CVPA-commissioned engineering report determined repairs needed to reopen the Hoyt Carriageway Bridge, historic gateway to the property. In May, CVPA held a landscape symposium with scholars of American Picturesque design, of which Vaux was a leader and The Point is an important example. CVPA also recently completed a Cultural Landscape Report Historic Narrative for The Point. CVPA is excited for you to join in a guided walking tour to hear more about what we are learning, accomplishing, and envisioning.
