Details

Event Type Visiting Vessel Deck Tour Description The world’s largest Viking ship built in modern times, the 115-foot Draken or “Dragon” in Norwegian, will be arriving at the Hudson River Maritime Museum on Friday, September 9 and staying until the morning of Thursday, September 15 before making her way to New York City. Built in Haugesund, Norway, she left her home port on April 24, 2016 and has been sailing across the North Atlantic Ocean on the historical route explored by the Vikings 1,000 years ago. Sigurd Aase, Norwegian entrepreneur, initiator and owner of Viking Kings A/S, started this project to recreate the journey of his ancestors to Vinland, the Viking name for North America. Draken is 115 feet long; 26 feet 2 inches wide; her Douglas Fir mast is 78 feet 8 inches high; the hull is oak and her sail is silk. Her top speed has been recorded at 14 knots. She is adorned with traditional ornamentations, such as a Dragon’s head and tail, woodcarvings and motifs from archaeological found ships, especially the Gokstad ship. Draken is rowed with 25 pairs of oars, and during her Expedition America 2016, she will be crewed by 32 skilled sailors. Draken will be available for public deck tours on Friday, September 9th from 12 pm to 7 pm, on Saturday, September 10th from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Monday, September 12th from 2 pm to 6 pm. Lecture by Captain Björn Ahlander on the Draken's trans-Atlantic voyage at 7 pm. Organization Hosting the Event Hudson River Maritime Museum
